Re: Just a few photos.

EDIT: Whoops. Too big!

I was woken up by my dog today and thought I'd like to go to the beach and try out my new tripod. Here's a few test shots:

You can see that tall building that makes up for their not so tall soldiers in their pants.

I almost lost my camera to the drink this shot. I just wish those houses weren't in the frame. Also, my brother was sitting behind me recording the sounds of the waves against the rocks. If you want to hear it, here's a link to that:

He too almost lost this little recording device to the drink ha ha. If you'd like something more relaxing to chill out to or whatever it is, here's the waves hitting the shore: //soundcloud.com/stephensaldanha/dubai-jumeira-beach-at-6am

Re: Just a few photos.

Here's a few more shots.

This one was around 4:40am taken on the same day and before the photos from the post above were shot:

These are from today/yesterday morning:

My brother and I went to look for this spot where a ship was recently beached, but it was out of Dubai in Sharjah(another emirate/state), so we drove out at about 4am went to Sharjah beach, and kept driving till we drove over the border to Ajman!(another emirate/state) Sun was coming soon, and with no beach to shoot, we rushed back to Dubai to see if we can get some of our beaches. I didn't know where to go since I always go to the same beach and same spot, and on the way I suddenly remembered a beach where I took my dog out for a swim once. It was a hidden beach, and what a beauty it was. It was calm(as it always is), but who wants to see a photo of the horizon. I found a few rocks and these were the results. We got there a bit late, so I only managed to get a few shots. If only I had an ND filter or even a polarizer!!

I was planning on going out to the desert tomorrow morning, but I think my car's been blocked by the neighbors and I want to leave when it's dark and I'd rather not bother the neighbors, so maybe that will happen on Saturday, but we'll see!

Re: Just a few photos.

Also, if you remember that noise thing I was complaining about before;

Image

I began to expose to the right and darken it in photoshop after someone suggested I try that, and it seems to have solved that issue. Works great for landscape shots, but horrible for low light + High action shots such as concerts or whatever. Lower ISO also helps heaps.

Keep in mind that if you can obtain enough detail without blowing your highlights, it's great, but sometimes you can't always expose to the right. The photo above is an example, but if you don't mind blown highlights, go ahead!

I just thought it would come in handy for anyone who had a similar problem.

I went looking for someplace isolated from the city, so I went far away into the desert.

When I got here, it was pitch black and I was a bit apprehensive about getting out the car. An Emirati friend of mine had told me that the spirits and Jinns(I don't really remember what else) roam the desert in the dark and it was best to not disturb them. I have never been one to believe in these things, but in the silence I couldn't help feel a bit spooked. The car was also on reserve the whole trip and I forgot to take any more, I don't know how such stupidity was possible, but I got there and back home alright, so that was nice.

Re:

Great stuff, beautiful. I like your photos a lot Josh.

I guess you know more about this kind than me, but here are some tips I learned along the way:

1. When you are shooting with a larger depth of field (small hole aperture, big number) it's best to put the aperture to 11 and not higher. For example, 22 gives you a larger depth of field, meaning everything far and near gets sharp, however 11 can make the point of focus a bit more sharp. When you put the aperture to 22, it doesn't really matter where you focus, but you do focus somewhere, and 11 can give a better result on that.

2. I noticed that many of your photos have horizons, and in most cases they are slightly tilted. It doesn't take much to fix it, and a little Photoshop on this can take you a long way in terms of aesthetics. You can play with the lens correction options in PS. Tilt is one thing, you can also try fixing distortions and perspectives as you want.

3. When you are doing long exposures, don't bother getting a remote and doing a 5 minute exposure or something. You already know that lower ISO gives a better result, but when you are shooting with digital you should also take note that it's best not to go beyond 30 seconds, cause just like ISO long exposure can also make noise. So when it's dark, you are on low ISO, and you feel that you need a longer shutter, it's actually better to raise the ISO and not the shutter speed.

4. I hope you are shooting with RAW. For Nikon it should be.. nif? Not sure. Anyways, if you are efficient working with RAW, you may not need Photomatix or HDR in general. I work with just Camera Raw that comes with Photoshop, and do a bit more work on Photoshop afterwards, and works just fine.

Things can differ from camera to camera, you may need to find what works best for you.

Keep up the good work man, and keep sharing.

Re: Just a few photos.

Good tips vash. f16 is usually the max for me. Very rarely do I go all the way to 22. I used 22 on a few desert shots to try and capture how barren it was as far as you could see.

My horizons were really horrible and I've started to learn after the beach shots actually. The desert ones are straight and not just because I noticed crooked horizons on my beach photos, but because most of the shots weren't low, and I had a proper base to stand on so I could take my time looking through the view finder, whereas in the beach shots, I'm standing on sharp rocks(in flip flops) my camera's a few inches away from the water(because it just looks better that way for most of them) and I've got trouble not falling in let alone to crouch as low as possible and look through the viewfinder. One of the first photos I posted recently(the rocks), I was standing on a rock that was the last before it dropped to deeper water(I'd say about 3m). The tripod moved because the a rock it was on moved with the water and made the horizon go completely off, and I took a few shots without checking the viewfinder because I didn't realize! I had to fix it in photoshop. Look at my base(Marked Green):

Image

and check out the original:
Image

So to add to your tips, make sure you have a good base to stand on and a good base for your camera to stand on.

Also, make sure you clean your gear before you go out. I thought I did a thorough job at home about 2 days before I went out and forgot to do it just and I had to spend a bit of time with the heal brush on photoshop fixing this stupid mistake that could've been completely avoided!(Marked in red).

I also fully agree with the RAW thing. I ALWAYS use RAW whenever I go out. It just gives you so much more control over everything when you bring it back. The only time I use JPEG is when I go to do those freelance things. I hate doing it, but my dad hates having the photos run through the conversion process because it takes time on Bridge and a lot of space on his computer(as well as cards when we shoot).

I sometimes blend exposures because I can't afford a GND filter. But That, contrast and sharpening is all that I do with PS. I used to use photomatix before and I love the effect it has on urban/city environments, but I HATE how robotic and cold it makes nature look. It's like a band butchering your favorite song with one of their horrid cover versions.

Also, I forgot to upload these ones:

Re: Just a few photos.

Hey Vash, when are we going to see your photos?

I haven't seen anything you've taken in a long long time!

Re: Just a few photos.

Please do! Or just post em in here!

I've just been on a mission cleaning my sensor tonight. It's been an hour 20 minutes and I've yet to get rid of all the dust. I really need to get me one of them arctic butterfly things. The blower I have doesn't seem to be working with some of the dust I've got in there. Ah well, at least there's less specks for the heal tool to fix!

Re: Just a few photos.

Man, am I upset. I spent hours cleaning my camera and it got even dirtier!

My brother and I went back to that desert spot I found because he wanted to record some sounds. We got caught it a pretty nasty sandstorm. I couldn't get it to show on camera unfortunately, though I thought I did.

Image
Look at how dirty it is!

This is probably the best photo I have for today. Spent 6 hours in the desert for this and it's ruined by dirtiness. I cleaned it up in photoshop, but it's noticeable. Not a very happy chappy about it. I don't know if you can see the sandstorm very well in this shot either. emoticon Ah well!
