Fleas?

First of all hello to everyone who remembers me! emoticon
Second, I have now had my locks 5 years+ and am facing a question of which I never had to answer:
Can fleas hang out and live on a human host in dreads?
We have a flea infestation from hanging laundry outside and they feel like thet are everywhere. I have a newborn and it really makes you crazy to seem them around her. I'm not any itchier at all so I think they can't stay in me but who knows? Everytime I see a bigger one in my bed or around the baby I have to wonder if it lept out of my hair! I LOVE my locks and don't want to cut and shave them. The flea people are coming tomorrow to treat the house but this question is burning in my mind.
Anyone know the answer?

i don't think they can live on humans like that.
they just use us as transport to their next tasty meal.

i was really worried about this a few months back as the cats got fleas and they (the cats) like to lay on my pillow when i'm not laying on it. i kept seeing fleas too and i was worried they were living in my hair. but once we treated the kitties the fleas quickly dispersed so obviously they weren't hanging out in our locks, as we didn't treat ourselves.

it can be scary though. i can't stand fleas. just seeing one makes you itch.

Re: Fleas?

hey loccsta! I've been really busy so I've had no time to even pop on here. I had a high risk pregnancy so I was online alot on bedrest but it was all baby research and most of my forum time is spent on mothering forumsnow...oh how life changes!
Well I kinda think that I'm not scratching or really itchy and I've been washing my hair every two weeks again (thinking of moving it up to every week)though I liked my every 3 weeks deal much better...I think I will looke it up on Wik--though most info about human hosts deals with folks without dreads!

Fleas?

Well, I'm an 'outside girl' and I'm used to fleas around me. Never had them since my hair started to lock but yeah, i do have some knowledge on them...

As far as I know fleas don't like 'dirty hair', as people call it. Most of the times Fleas only liv eon scalps that aer washed regularly (read; washed every day) and all. And I know people weill get mad now, me calling dreads dirty, which I don't. But you don't wash your scalp every single day, I assume. So, because of that I dont' think you'll be "infected".

Also, a few fleas doesn't matter, as long as you don't find eggs in your roots. And even then it won't be a big problem. You could use those anit-flea shampoo's. You can because your locks are locking for that long already. You shouldn't with baby-locks, because it'll smooth down your hair and it'll stop the process, but with locks that old you can use them. They might get frizzy, but that'll be over in a few days.

So, my word is: Don't worry. Use shampoo if you're really, rea`lly scared, but there's no need to panic, okay?

G'luck!!!

Re: Fleas?

aren't you refering to headlice/nits not fleas though? fleas are the ones that can jump a few feet at a time and stuff, i dont think there are any varieties that infest humans but i saw an advert about cleaning carpets to get rid of flea eggs so maybe sometimes they lay them in random places.

lice 'prefer' cleaner scalps as it means they have to burrow less to get to blood and they can get more air that way aswell as using less effort, it doesnt make you immune, just lowers your chances if only one or two get on your head as chances are theyre tired from the relatively long journey there anyway. a lot of exposure to lice will probably still allow one to infect you regardless. If you've got dreads itll be hard to find any so if you do see some there's probably a lot more, depends on their colour and your hair colour i guess.

Whowever I hadn't washed my dreads for 3 weeks and though I got lice!! I guess my hair were dirty after 3 weeks of not washing them, but I do got them!!!

So I washed my head whith a special shampoo against lice and their eggs 4 times a week and putted a plastic bagg over my head for like 1.5 hours and I got rid of them...
