in european democracies there are well over 2 parties and they all get represented with a precentage difference.

if your party got 12% of the vote, then you get 12% representations

i.e. 2 seats vs 10 seat for example, in their equivalent of our house or representatives

therefore, minority groups get represented too

america maybe should try that, but its hard to change constitution

american constitutions is the oldest in use and is the most difficult to change

and is less specific (only a little bit over 5,000 words) where are other constitutions of other democracies are over 20, 000 words and are a lot more specific and are able to change easier (with changing times)

but the founding fathers didnt actually write the constitution with a two- or multi-party system in mind.. the assumed it would just be one party

but politics is so interesting isnt it? how its just a big stalemate in the white house right now

Re: One Party, Two Party, More

I don't know if this has been stated already, but if you have a majority election in one-representative-constituency (dunno if it's the right word, what I mean is: If you have an election system where you elect one person in each constituency as the majority choice) This leads to a two party system. This makes it virtually impossible for a third party to enter the second election unless unusual circumstances are present.

The alternative is (what we have in sweden for instance) proportional elections. This means that each party get proportional candidate seats for the percent they get in each constituency. This election type creates a multiple-party system, but both types produce advantages and drawbacks.

The first type makes it easier to make decisions when the government has been decided, as in the latter, there have to be coalition governments and all decisions are give-and-take-decisions. It's also easier for the voter to know who to blame in the first (us-type) system than in the proportional one. However, the proportional system lets more opinions be heard.

Read more about the fact that majority elections in one-representative-constituencies leads to a two-party-system in this article //en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maurice_Duverger
His theory came to be known as Duverger's law.

Re: One Party, Two Party, More

american politics is a one party system. people are often confused and believe that there are two or three distinct and organic dominant political parties. but the reality is there is one party with two or three different factions. :fro:
