Re:

Many here recommend baking soda. I never actually used it.

You really don't need any dread shampoos. Use any shampoo of your liking that does not have conditioner in it. The whole point is to keep your hair clean and dry, so even body soaps do the job.

In my case, I use dandruff shampoos cause I have dry scalp.

Re: shampoo problem

Lets get one thing clear first. Using only water is just a shower/rinsing. When you use shampoo/soap/things like that, that is called washing. Being a non-native speaker I also had to learn that here emoticon

I cannot really help you with baking soda. Generally, keep showering like you normally do, but try to slowly distance the washing times. The less you wash, your scalp/hair will learn to get oily less often. Eventually getting to a once-a-week washing routine is good enough.

Remember that dreading is a process of back and forth. Washing may loosen your hair a bit, but after drying it helps get tighter than before. So in the early stage, you would want to have less back and more forth. I hope that makes sense.

In the end, don't over think it. If you learn what it means to "leave your hair alone", in a couple years your dreads will look badass anyway.

Re: shampoo problem

Baking soda is a good alternative to shampoo.Use it as often as you like.Mix a little with water, rub it in your scalp and then rinse.I also agree with everything Vashkor said.
