New neglect set
Hey all,
haven't been here for ages, and it´s good to see there are still some familiar names around the forum. :-)
After i had to cut my last set, which i had for about 7 and a half years, for health reasons, i started new about 7 months ago.
While my last set was backcombed in the beginning and then neglected, this time i went completely neglect (or nowadays it seems to be called "freeform"?).
It´s coming along good so far, the only problem is, that the strands on the sides and on top don´t stop to try congoing with each other. Ripping doesn´s help much. I do it every day, but still the next day it looks really bad again. If i forget it for only one day, i have two massive congos on every side of my head.
It´s just those two areas on top of my head and on each side, which do this, the rest is ok. Any suggestions, what i could do?
My arms are already hurting constantly from all the ripping, and it´s also very painful for the scalp.
Any help would be appreciated.

Re:
Gosh! I am still relatively new to dreads (still under a year with beginning partials) but even almost 7 months with neglect set, i am hardly separating, but what I have HEARD is to separate when wet and just, the unfortunate part, some folks WILL have to separate like mad in those beginning times (months? Im not sure and it depends), but it does get less necessary as time goes on, as I am sure you know from alreadyhaving mature dreads. Yeah, it's wild how some start experincing this in month one and here I am, still just trying to make the knotty sections! :P
Oh! Also, maybe you are ripping too close to the scalp? You mentioned congoing, but I think they can matt a bit at the scalp as long as you keep track of the lower part. Right? And, oil or refreshing sprays might soothe sore scalp. It's getting colder here now, so I'm just starting up with a bit of oils again for dry scalp. Although I really like the Dollylocks refreshing spray for daily use. Maybe the moisture would helpyour dreads from congoing so much? Maybe? :)

Re:
Thanks to you two for the good advice. I guess tying some string around the roots might be a good idea. I heard this before but always thought it might look ridiculous on me... but maybe i should give it a try. After all new dreads look ridiculous most of the time anyways. At least mine do. XD Oil for the scalp on the other hand might not do me any good, as i already have very oily scalp, but thanks for suggesting anyways.

Re: New neglect set
Yeah, I should know that by now... ;-) so today I got myself something nice to tie around my roots and decided not to care about ridiculousness. After all ive been through this before years ago. I forgot so much.

Re:
My hair starts to tangle in the shower if I dont use coconut oil/macadamia oil based shampoo. I have had natural clumps of dreads ages ago when I was 15. It took me about two hours and lots of conditioner to comb it out as I still had to go to school and had no idea about the roots that are true of my ancestry in the Caribbean. I feel that it is right to dread properly this time and I might start off getting them attached in Thailand, as my roots grow out, I dunno. But my hair just dreads in clumps naturally too. I dunno what can be done but to go to Jamaica and see the lake set on fire!

Re:
oh right! I completely forgot about wraps, bands, or beads. I tried rubber bands once. DO NOT USE RUBBER BANDS! um, but maybe the regular hair bands...or even a twist tie. I tried that temporarily. (not sure if twist tie translates in all parts of the world). I have not had dreadbeads, nor are my dreads really thick enough for them anyway, i think. ha! Not yet
also, about the sleep factor. Ha! I believe this is why (well, this or another reason) my dreads are forming quicker in certain spots. The sides are locking up faster than the back because I'm a sidesleeper. interesting! I try sleeping on my back, but i just can't!
and Side Show Bob. yep! totally! eek! Think I still have this a little. Taming down some though.
