ive had them stretched for me when i was at a 6 gauge all the way down to a 2. but recently i started stretching with tephlon tape. i think it's very wise to use this method. it's painless and it gets a nice even stretch.
here's what you do. get some tephlon tape. wrap a layer about the size of your fingernail around your plug. lube up your plug and put it in your ear. it will be tight for the first day or two. then after it loosens up a bit after like 4 days, add another layer. do this until you reach the next size.
it will start to spell aweful, hahaha, but you'll love this technique.

you should post a pic of your earlobe so i can recomend a good gauge to get pierced with. or just go to a good experienced piercer. if you got huge earlobes, then you should considder getting pierced bigger. if you start out with like a pin hole with big earlobes, your gonna have to stretch pretty big to have your ear look good. too much skin under the plug looks bad, in my opinion.
if you have a small lobe, obviously get pierced smaller so you have plenty of room.
good luck. how big you planning on going?
im going up to an inch in a few weeks.
